Access via RIPTA
Brown University is accessible from anywhere in Rhode Island via RIPTA bus, or ferry. The RIPTA website has a trip planner which makes navigation around the state extremely simple. (RIPTA provides statewide bus service).
Taking RIPTA from Kennedy Plaza
RIPTA bus and trolley routes terminate in Kennedy Plaza. Once at the Plaza, the following bus routes will take you through the Tunnel to Thayer Street (a block away from the Department):
- 35 Rumford/Newport Avenue Outbound
- 40 Butler/Elmgrove Outbound
- 42 Hope Street Outbound
- 49 Camp Street Outbound
- 78 Beverage Hill Outbound
- 92 Green Line Trolley - East
Schedules for all of these can be found on-line.
The RIPTA Trolley will also take you from Kennedy Plaza to the CIT. Take the Green Line (RIPTA bus route "92 East") - the trolley is marked "Fox Point". Check the schedule online.
The fare for both the bus and trolley is $1.75. You may transfer at discounted rates; see the RIPTA website for detailed fare information.
Whether you take the bus or the trolley, you want to get off at the stop immediately following the tunnel. Walk half a block downhill on Thayer Street (past the Starbucks). At the intersection, cross both Waterman and Thayer Streets, and walk past the 14-story Sciences Library. The CIT (a 6-story red brick building) will be on your right.

Walk east along Washington Street (walking between most RIPTA stops and the park, heading against traffic.) Cross the river, and continue up the hill along Waterman Street. Continue for five blocks through the Brown campus. The CIT building is on the south-west corner of Waterman Street and Brook Street, right next to the 14-story Sciences library.
